Persepolis book review

Persepolis: What happened in Iran in a child’s eyes

Persepolis is a comic book which is written by Marjane Satrapi. The author is an Iranian, and moved to France many years ago. she saw and suffered The Islamic Revolution, the new cruel government’s brutality, and the war between Iran and Iraq. She wrote and recorded all these things she saw in this book. She is so brave that wrote the truth down, because if she went back to Iran, the government would kill her. This book is popular and won many awards, such as a New York Times notable book, a Time Magazine “best comix of the year” . Persepolis is a book that really easy to read and tell us what happened in Iran in a naive girl’s eyes, I love it.

Actually, when I first opened this book, I don't like it , because the letters in this book are all capitals. That confused me, I hate it, but after I read some pages, I fell in love with this book. This book told us a true story happened in Iran. The main role, Marjane was only 10 years old, and The Islamic Revolution was happening. Marjane’s parents also joined it and fought for freedom. One year later, there was a new government named Islamic government. This government didn't bring the freedom to Iranians, they are very cruel and strict. Then, Iran had been at war. Marjane was a big mouth, and the war was dangerous at that time, so Marjane’s parents decided to sent her abroad. That’s the book ending.

While I was reading this book, I found this book was really unique and interesting. I think the girl’s view was very simple and telling truth in a soft tone. For example, when Marjane’s parents’ friends talked about the execution, Marjane even thought they cut people in piece. What a serious topic, but the humorous and relaxing tone makes me feel relaxed, not heavy. A little girl’s eyes, there is no difference between people and people, but we always have some subjective opinions before we meet this person. For example, Marjane couldn't understand the class difference. She couldn't understand why her maid couldn't love with her neighbor’s son, why the poor people received the keys to the heaven only. For some older people, they knew these were rules. Marjane’s simple thoughts make me feel relaxed and I also was touched.

In conclusion, I love this book, not only because of the perfect content, but also because Marjane was so brave that wrote down these words which can even kill her to show us the truth.
