successes come from creating

Clarence Birdseye, a man who had a funny name, but had a great life. He has many identities, such as a scientist, an inventor or a successful businessman. In his 70 years’ life, he did many things which were unbelievable in my eyes. Recently, I have read a book named Frozen In Time which is written by Mark Kurlansky. He allows us to know the story of Clarence Birdseye. At first, I thought it was a boring and empty book, but after I reading deeper, I found this is an amazing story. I am really interested in his success, why did he succeed? As I said in the title, successes come by creating. Also, successes need some more conditions.

One of the biggest parts of this book and Birdseye’s life is going to the Labrador island. I think this is also the most important part of this book, so I am more interested in this part. In this bleak desolate island, he made money and came up with the idea which changed his whole life.

At first, Birdseye just wanted to make money here, but he also found how to refrigerate food accidentally. When he fished in the winter in Labrador, he found the fishes froze immediately when they left the water. Then, Birdseye got the inspiration to invent refrigerators. Labrador had a large number of fishermen, but none of them came up with this idea. Birdseye cared about every details in his life, and he had the business savvy that normal people did not have. That is one reason that why Birdseye succeeded, but others did not.

Also, Birdseye has persistence. If he wanted do something that he was interested in, he would not give up. When he was in Labrador Island, he wanted to build a company. However, he did not have enough money, but he had enough persistence. His father recommended an investor to him. He immediately flew to New York City, but the investor even did not want to see him. As I said Birdseye had sufficient persistence. He waited for the investor and called him day by day. Finally, the investor decided to invest his company. Birdseye’s persistence was the biggest reason that why he succeeded.

At last, let’s talk about his idea that coming to Labrador, one of the most desolate places. If I were him, I may not go to this island, because I had a good life in America, why should I go to that bitterly cold and impoverished place? Also, America has a lot of opportunities. If I work hard, I will succeed in America, not Labrador. I just left from one dangerous place, why would I go to another bad place to live? However, Birdseye decided to go, and this trip changed his life. He was far-sighted. He may not know he would find the secret of refrigerators, but he did know he could make money here.

In addition, some external factors made him succeed. Birdseye had a good wife, she always supported him. When Birdseye said he wanted to go to Labrador, she supported him. In fact, many wives would persuade their husbands not to go, but Birdseye’s wife did not. She supported her husband all the time, she believed Birdseye had his own mind. A good supporter is also an important factor to achieve success.

In conclusion, I am always interested in how a successful men succeed. Birdseye was a good example. He had persistence to the things that he wanted to do, and he was far-sighted. I learned a lot from his story. Like I said above, successes are not about luck, they come from creating.

Comparison: visual way and imagination

There are always many differences between books and movies of a same story. Some of movies are true to the books, but some are not really. Today, I watched a movie named Opal dreams which is adapted from the book, Pobby and Dingan. The movie is quite different from the book. In my opinion, I like the book more.

First, there are numerous differences. For example, the movie deleted one of my favorite parts in the book. There is a plot in the book that Ashmol came to tell the preacher something about Pobby and Dingan. When I was reading this part of the book, I imagined that the preacher must be a kind old man. I expected to see how this character look like in the movie, but the movie never mentioned this character! Also, Ashmol in this movie is not as brave as the book. In the book, there are many conversations between Ashmol and his family. However, the conversations are deleted in the movie, especially the conversations between Ashmol and Kellyanne. In my opinion, some conversations can express Ashmol’s bravery and love to his family. The film only has a few conversations. That makes Ashmol not as brave as the book.

In my opinion, I like the book more. The scenes in the book are invisible, so we can imagine them as what we like them to be. However, the movie is like what the directer liked. Thus, the scenes are different from what I thought. Also, the book has a richer content. The directer must consider the length of the film, so he must delete something. For me, I’d like to see a detailed story, so I like the book.

There are numerous differences between the movie and the book. The movie tells the story as a visual way, and the book gives us space to imagine. Both of them are excellent, but I like to read the book rather than watch the movie.

Galileo: Learn something

Olivia Cao

Galileo: Not only science
People always say Galileo is a great person. When we talk about Galileo, we can think of many achievements of him, such as improvements to the telescope and consequent astronomical observations and support for Copernicanism. I watched the show named Galileo this Saturday. It is a drama which is wrote by Bertolt Brecht. Bertolt Brecht is a famous German playwright. Life of Galileo is one of his notable works. In this play, we can not only see Galileo’s achievements, but also his personalities and some social problems. This is an amazing play, I learned many things from it. I will recommend to my friends.

Five hundred years before, if someone wanted to prove the earth rotates around the sun, he must consider the consequences. In some ways, Galileo was a brave man, even if he finally yielded. Some people think Galileo should stand up for science and truth. I ever read a article, the author said Galileo’s silence and weakness led the civilization of Europe to stop developing for fifty years. I agree with that, his experience and compromise scared other scientists at that time. People were afraid of telling the truth at that time. Thus, many theories could not be discuss in public. Even Galileo’s close students civilized him and hated him. From this perspective, Galileo should sacrifice for science. Is it wrong that he chose a shameful life. However, Galileo was human. In some ways, human is kind of selfish, living is human’s instinct. We can not ask everybody to sacrifice for science. It is a normal thing that Galileo chose to live with his daughter and gave up the science.

However, there are many scientists are true to the truth, like Galileo’s student, Andrea. They are not afraid of death, they are real scientists. At last, when Andrea came by his teacher, they argued. Andrea was so true to justice that he could not accept the truth that his favorite teacher gave up the truth. Galileo understood Andrea’s thoughts, so he gave him his research results. Then the truth was known. In this play I liked Andrea most, he represented the truth and justice. Also, I like Galileo’s daughter, because she was the only one who stayed with Galileo and supported Galileo all the time. She thought about his father all the time, she loved Galileo. In my opinion, this is one of the biggest reasons why he gave up the truth, because he loved his daughter.

Actually, I can not understand the whole play, so I did so much research after the play. I was confused the character which was acted by Luke. I did not understand who he was. Then, I asked Luke who he was. He said he was the worst guy in this play, he donated money to the church and controlled them. I was still confused, so I searched him by Internet, I got nothing. I am still confused about this character.

I like this play and I will recommend this show to others, even if it is a little difficult to understand. I like the story, as the introduction of this play said “ Learn from the show”. I did learn something from this show, and I hope my friends learn something too. Also, I like the acting. Actors are so professional that I wondered was I watching some famous actors’ performance. Anyway, I will recommend this show to others.

In conclusion, I am so glad I watched this show. This is a good show. If I have a chance to watch again, I must go. I recommend this to all my friends. I did not only enjoy this show, but also learn from this show.

Bertolt Brecht

Bertolt Brecht
Bertolt Brecht was a German Marxist poet, playwright, and theatre director. Brecht died on 14 August 1956 of a heart attack at the age of 58.
His Notable works are The Threepenny Opera, Life of Galileo, Mother Courage and Her Children, The Good Person of Szechwan, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui.
From his late twenties Brecht remained a lifelong committed Marxist who, in developing the combined theory and practice of his "epic theatre", synthesized and extended the experiments of Erwin Piscator and Vsevolod Meyerhold to explore the theatre as a forum for political ideas and the creation of a critical aesthetics of dialectical materialism.
Brecht has been a controversial figure in Germany, and in his native city of Augsburg there were objections to creating a birthplace museum. By the 1970s, however, Brecht's plays had surpassed Shakespeare's in the number of annual performances in Germany.

During the war years, Brecht became a prominent writer of the Exilliteratur. He expressed his opposition to the National Socialist and Fascist movements in his most famous plays: Life of Galileo, Mother Courage and Her Children, The Good Person of Szechwan, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, and many others.

Galileo--Great scientist

Galileo Galilei was an Italian physicist, mathematican, engineer, astrongnomer, and philosopher who played a major role in the scientific revolution. His achievements include improvements to the telescope and consequent astronomical observations and support for Copernicanism. Galileo has been called the "father of modern observational astronomy", the "father of modern physics", the "father of science", and "the father of modern science".
His contributions to observational astronomy include the telescopic confirmation of the phase of Venus, the discovery of the four largest satellites of Jupiter (named the Galilean moons in his honour), and the observation and analysis of sunspots. Galileo also worked in applied science and technology, inventing an improved military compass and other instruments.
Galileo's championing of heliocentrism was controversial within his lifetime, a time when most subscribed to either geocentrism or the Tychonic system. He met with opposition from astronomers, who doubted heliocentrism due to the absence of an observed stellar parallax. The matter was investigated by the Roman Inquisition in 1615, which concluded that heliocentrism was false and contrary to scripture, placing works advocating the Copernican system on the index of banned books and forbidding Galileo from advocating heliocentrism. Galileo later defended his views in Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, which appeared to attack Pope Urban VIII, thus alienating not only the Pope but also the Jesuits, both of whom had supported Galileo up until this point. He was tried by theHoly Office, then found "vehemently suspect of heresy", was forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. It was while Galileo was under house arrest that he wrote one of his finest works, Two New Sciences, in which he summarised the work he had done some forty years earlier, on the two sciences now called kinematics and strength of materials.

The secret of an opal's color lies not in its substance but in its absences."

We all know opal is beautiful, but opal is rare and hard to find. Thus, it is expensive. Some people even spend their whole life on looking for opal. The rarer it is, the more beautiful it is. People like it more.

Ashmol thought his sister was crazy and he never believed Poppy and Dingan were real before, but after Poppy and Dingan were lost, he changed. He even went to Old Sid's mine to look for Poppy and Dingan or organized a funeral for them. After Kellyanne died, he and the people in the town realized his sister were right. He thought Poppy and Dingan were real. At last, all the people in this town had an imaginary friend. Ashmol did not think her sister were crazy any more. He loved her, and he even did not believe she was died. He realized how " opal" was beautiful.

In this story, Ashmol's father was almost crazy about opal, he cared opal more than his family. After he was charged as a ratter, he had more time to stay with his family. He felt how warm his family was. He was back to his family, and he loved them. He also understood the ' opal's real beautiful colors'.

Change--Personality

Change—Personality
Actually, lots of people have a imaginary friends. They may be not real and invisible for others, so people always put the wrong construction on what they see. However, imaginary friends are important to themselves. Poppy and Dingan is a story about imaginary friends of a little girl named Kellyanne, and it is written by Ben Rice. I like this book not only because it has a rich content, but also because it reflect personalities. It is not just a simple story of a mad girl, we can know more from this book.

First, as I said this is not a simple story. What does this mean? We can see all the people’s personality through two imaginary friends. Actually, this book is about a change, the change before Kellyanne’s father lost her friends and after he lost her friends. We can see everyone’s personality from this change. Her missing friends even changed her whole family or whole town.

For example, before she lost her imaginary friends, Ashmol never believed Poppy and Dingan were real, he even was aggressive to them. “ I walked over to where Poppy was supposed to be sitting and punched the air and kicked the air in the head to show Kellyanne that Poppy was a figment of her imagining.” ( Page 3. Rice, Ben. Poppy and Dingan. New York: Vintage, 2000. Print.) After Kellyanne was ill, he changed a lot. He even went to Old Sid’s mine and went down the claim at midnight to look for Poppy and Dingan. He complained about himself, he also thought the thing which he was doing was a stupid thing on his way to the mine. The book said: “ When I was half the way out to Wyoming I stopped and asked myself what the hell I was doing going looking in the middle of the night for two dead people who didn't exist. ” ( Page 51. Rice, Ben. Poppy and Dingan. New York: Vintage, 2000. Print.) In my opinion, he still did not believe Poppy and Dingan were real, but he did these things. He loved his family and his sister, he could try his best to let his sister get better and cheer his parents up. Loving his family is one of his biggest personality. The author did not say this clearly in words, but he did wrote these details to express his personality. I like this method. In general, several details are stronger than one “ love” sentence.

Also, this change influenced other people. Before Kellyanne’s dad lost Poppy and Dingan, people treated Kellyanne’s father normally or even liked him. However, after he lost Poppy and Dingan and was pointed as a ratter or a thief, people changed their attitudes. They did not believe him anymore, some of them even burned his tense, even though he was clean. People did not think of their past relationships, they wanted to kick Williamsons out of this town and protect their own mines. These are negative personalities from this book.

At last, I should say I love this book. I’ve never seen a fiction that talks about imaginary friends, this is interesting. Also, I love the rich content in this book. The most interesting thing is the author expressed the personalities by writing this story of imaginary friends or change.

Quiz

1. I think street is about silence and cheating. She wanted to say when people had some troubles, they should face them, not escape. Silence can not help. In third stanza, she wrote the people who were silent. They cannot solve any problems. Thus, " the sky which sews and sews, tirelessly sewing
In the last stanza, she wrote: " They sleep twice, once for the one who is gone,once for themselves. They dream thickly, dream double, they wake from a dream into another one, they walk the short streets calling out names, and then they answer. People who slept completely are the people who did not face the troubles. They were cheating to themselves.
2. There are 8 lines and 5 sentences in stanza 4.
3. She wrote "overhead loud grackles are claiming their trees and the sky which sews and sews, tirelessly sewing ". The grackles who are claiming are the people who speak out what they want to say. However, their voices are too small. People can only hear it in quiet evenings. Some silent people stand here, they want to speak, but they do not.
4. In the last stanza, the author wrote two kinds of people. One slept, but then refreshed. This means somebody who were silent before, but then woke up. Another is still sleeping. This means somebody who did not want to speak. She wanted to say people should speak what they want to say, do not keep silence anymore.
5. There are 3 stanzas and 3 sentences in this poem.
6. I think it means the author have lived in America for a long time. She is familiar to American culture. She is an Arab, and she loves Arab, but others regard her as an American more.
7. Hidden also described some little things, but the author wanted to express a big principle by writing this poem. Hidden told us the pain of silence. If we want to say something, we must say it. People never understand, unless we tell them. Also, in other Nye's poems, she used this method. For example, she talked about street and some other little things in the poem, street. She wanted people to speak what they want to say.
8. In this poem, the fuel is Arab culture. She is an Arab, but most people only thought she was an American. Arab culture is really important to her. If she do not speak out, she will lose this cultural identity. In the poem, she said: " If you tuck the name of a loved one under your tongue too long without speaking it it becomes blood sigh." It means if she does not say she was a Arab, people will think she is an American all the time.

Two months' journey

Goals
Olivia Cao

Here are my three goals:
1. Be active in class
2. Get an A from this course
3. Read books everyday

Time goes by rapidly, I even thought I just arrived few days. Two months passed, I learned a lot of things in this class. I remembered what goals I wrote down in the beginning of this class. I think I made a big progress, but it is not enough.

First of all, I want to talk about my progress. I think I made a progress. I am more active in the class than before. I never spoke in the class before, but now I feel free to ask or answer the questions in the class, even if I still do not speak often. Also, I made progress in reading books. I read books very often now. I almost fall in love with reading. I have already read two books, except Persepolis.

Second, I want to talk about what I did in this marking period. I read Persepolis, and had many analyzations about this book. For example, I wrote two essays about what Persepolis and the character in this book. Also, I have already worked on Nye's poems for few days, and I read many Nye's poems. We discussed about the poems and watched videos about Nye. I feel good by doing these things. Language is still a big problem for me. To solve this problem, I recite vocabulary everyday. Obviously, I made a big progress. At least I can express what I mean clearly. With the progress in vocabulary, I can speak in public more, and I am trying to be more active in this class. Also, reading books makes me feel relaxed. Besides the books I must read, I read some more interesting books.

Third, I should work on using some better words, I do not want to use " very" all the time. Also, I should be more active in class. I am not active enough, even if I made a progress. Thus, I will try my best to behave well in the class. I also have three goals for next marking period. First, as I said, I want be more active in the class. Second, I should recite vocabulary everyday. Third, I hope I can go.over the things I learned everyday. Also, I want a good grade in this whole class.

At last, I want to do something different in the upcoming marking period. On the one hand, I will try my best to use advanced words in my paper. I just recited vocabulary in the past two months, but I still use some simple words to write, such as very, good. I do not like these words, so I will use more advanced words. On the other hand, I will be more focus on blog post. I got bad grades on blog post, so I will be focus on my blog post.

In conclusion, I like this class, I learned a lot of things and I will be more hardworking in the next period.

In class writing

1. I think skin means Arab culture or religion, because the author said: " But skin felt it was never seen, never known as a land on the map", culture and religion cannot be seen, but they exist everywhere. " Skin had hope, that's what skin does. ", it means culture or religion can spread hope to people who believe it, that is its job. "Heals over the scared place, makes a road. "This sentense means people need hope to get out of troubles. If people don't have hope, they will be desperate. Then they want to give up, and they won't heal over the scared place or make a road. Also, culture build the road or city, they base on culture.

2. In my opinion, skin symbolizes Arab culture or religion.

4. I think "love" means her love for her grandma and her grandma's love for her. This sentense shows that the author miss and love her grandmother so much. Even if she moved to America, she still cares about Palestine and her grandmother. That's why the author said " breath in two countries".

Poem

See,
Sky is blacker.
I wish,
terrorists stop.
Tell me,
When can we see flowers again?

Summary

Summary of my grandmother in the stars
In this poem, the author shows the deep love between she and her grandmother, and tells us who is her grandmother. The poem makes me feel peaceful.

First of all, her grandmother and the author loved each other so much, and this love would be in the author's heart, she would never forget it. When she miss her grandmother, she has memories of them. Even if her grandmother died, she still has memories.

Second, this poem shows what kind of person her grandmother is. Her grandmother is a normal peasant who lived in a small village. She was poor, but she was hardworking and very happy. Thus, she had "shrugged feet" and "moth-eaten scarves"

Third, I felt very peaceful when I was reading this poem. The author used very beautiful words to describe her grandmother, because she wants to show us a gentle, kind old woman. Also, she uses soft and gentle tone to stress she miss her grandmother so much.

At last, I want to say I love this poem, because I am touched by the deep love between them and the beautiful words or gentle tone.

19 varieties of gazelle

9/11,2001, a sad day. Nowadays, people are still afraid of talking about it. After 9/11, the world fell into trust crisis to Arab. Thus, Naomi Shihab wrote 19 varieties of gazelle to response 9/11 and the crisis. She also shows many Arabs and Arab culture in this book, because she wants to show people cannot judge a group of people only by several bad things. Like Marjane Satrapi said in Persepolis:" I believe that an entire nation should not be judged by the wrongdoings of a few extremists. "

In this book, the author mentions many Arabs and Arab culture. There are many cultural things. For instance, she wrote a poem about fig trees. Fig trees symbolize Arab and also author's home. Why the author wrote these cultural things down? In my opinion, there are two aspects: telling people Arab is a beautiful area and spreading Arab culture. The author wants to show how beautiful Arab is and people cannot judge it by some extremists. For example, she wrote a poem named Different ways to pray. She said:" There was the method of kneeling, a fine method, if you lived in a country. " ( 19 varieties of gazelle) and " There were those who didn't care about praying. The young ones. The ones who had been to America. " ( 19 varieties of gazelle) The author think Arab is a amazing area, the people live here are religious, but not all of them are fundamentalists. Also, this area is extremely unique, other countries hardly have these traditions. The author shows Arab's charm to the readers successfully.

The author wrote this book after 9/11 to respond it. Why she wanted to show this? In my opinion, I think she wants to show the world there are also love in the Middle east, and try to release people's fear for Arab or Middle east. She wants to spread love and peace by writing this book. Actually, I think the author is kind of like Marjane Satrapi. They are both from Middle East, and they both want to show the truth of Middle east and tell people there are not only violence in there by writing. There are some poems about fundamentalists, but most poems in this book about love and peace. For instance, a poem named fundamentalists, the last sentence touched me:"If he would believe his life like that he would not follow his father into war. " The author shows fundamentalism cannot make life better, but worse. Besides this, I'd like to read the poems which are full of love and peace, such as The words under words or my grandmother in the stars. When I read these poems, I feel peaceful. My favorite sentence is:" When I was sick they followed me, I woke from the long fever to find them covering my head like cool prayers. " ( The words under the words) The description is very detailed, I can feel the love. The author shows the readers the love and happiness in the Middle east, and there is not only violence.

In conclusion, the author shows love in the Middle east, and releases people's fear to Arab after 9/11. It is a good response to 9/11. After reading, I feel a little guilty. I didn't like the Middle east before I read these poems, because I used to think the Middle east only has terrorism and violence. Now I realize I was wrong, Arab culture is amazing and has a long history. I cannot judge it by several wrongdoings. Thus, I think this book is a good response to 9/11.

Grandmother

First of all, I think her grandmother is a kind, lovely person. For instance, the author said:" When I was sick they followed me, I woke from the long fever to find them covering my head like cool prayers. " ( The words under the words) Her grandmother was with her everyday before she moved to America. Also, the hands like " the damp shine of a goat's new skin". ( The words under the words) I can imagine grandmother must be very gentle.

Her grandmother is also attentive, and she loves the author. As the author wrote:" She knows how often mail arrives, how rarely there is a letter. " ( The words under the words) and " listening to it read again and again." ( The words under the words) She loves her son and her granddaughter, so she expects and cares about their letters. Feeling the message from the letters again and again.

Third, grandmother is religious deeply. For example, in the poem, the author said:" My grandmother's eyes say Allah is everywhere, even in death. " ( The words under the words) According to the poem The words under the words, grandmother mentioned Allah all the time. That shows grandmother is religious deeply.

Also, grandmother is hardworking farmer who lives in a village, and maybe she is poor. As the author wrote:" What you think of him, and the village's one heroic cow. " ( My grandmother in the stars) and " I bow to your rugged feet, the moth-eaten scarves that knot your hair". ( My grandmother in the stars) In general, only industrious farmer has rugged feet. She wore moth-eaten scarves, so she may be poor.

Questions of poem

1. Why they always moved very often?
2. Why they mentioned dig many times?
3. Why the poems all mentioned the father?

Blog #4

Persepolis is a comic book, but it is not only for children, even only for older people, because there are too many political things to read for kids. The author, Marjane Satrapi wants to tell the people who don't understand what is happening in Iran the story about Iran. Her purpose is allowing people in the world to know the real truth and understand Iran is a civilized country, not just full of fundamentalism, fanaticism and terrorism. In my opinion, I think she achieved her goal.

First of all, this book is writing to the people who don't know the truth of Iran or the people are interested in Iran's story or even everyone. The more people read this book, the more people will know what is happening in Iran. That's what Marjane Satrapi wants, so she writes this book to everyone. To allow everyone to read this book, she should make the book be more interesting. The author uses pictures to make people understand the book easier and make the book more interesting, not just for kids. Most books which describe the serious topics are boring, but Marjane Satrapi is so clever that drawing pictures and telling the story from a little girl's eyes. That's more unforgettable and much more interesting. As an Iranian who grew up in Iran and suffered the Islamic revolution, the Islamic government and the war against Iraq, there is no one know more truth than her. To be honest, she succeeded, this book is good for everyone to read.

Second, on the one hand, she wants to convey that Iran is a civilized country, people cannot judge it by several bad things. As she wrote in the introduction of this book:" This old and great civilization has been discussed mostly in connection with fundamentalism, fanaticism and terrorism. " and " I believe that an entire nation should not be judged by the wrongdoings of a few extremists. " ( Satrapi introduction) On the other hand, she wants to tell the world the real truth of what was happening in Iran. As she said:" I also don't want those Iranians who lost their lives in prisons defending freedom who died in the war against Iraq, who suffered under various repressive regimes, or eho were forced to leave their families and flee their homeland to be forgotten. " ( Satrapi introduction)

At last, I think she achieved her purpose. For example, for me, a person who knew nothing about Iran, except terrorism and oil before I read this book. After I finished reading this book, I knew Iran has a long history, even more than four thousand years. Almost everyone in this country is religious. I also knew what was the Islamic revolution, and how cruel the government was. Many people were killed, because of the autocracy. I also learned not everyone in this country is fundamentalist, only a few people are fundamentalists. For example, in Marjane's family, everyone has advanced thinking. They believe in democracy and they fight against the government for freedom.

In conclusion, I think Marjane Satrapi is a great author, she uses a good way to describe the story is happening in Iran and allow people in any ages to read this book.
